NASA Genesis

Jay Martin, CP, FAAOP was invited by NASA to help them create Ironman-like exoskeleton suits for space and military applications. Through his work with NASA he discovered and created counter-intuitive new methods of how to make prosthetics more comfortable, using fabric-based materials.

He transitioned his NASA work into a new way of fitting prosthetics, and invented and grew the revolutionary Socket-less Socket™ technology and brand. Since then Jay has fully re-imagined his socket concepts from the ground up, to maximize comfort and make that comfort accessible to all amputees. Now his latest and most advanced socket design, the Slingshot Socket™, is the most comfortable and accessible socket on Earth.

Conventional Sockets

There was a time when wooden sockets were common. Fiberglass resins replaced using wood, and carbon fiber ultimately replaced fiberglass. The evolution of socket eras has been catalyzed by the invention of simpler fabrication methods, but the underlying socket designs have seen very little change for many decades. Wooden sockets are categorically similar to conventional carbon fiber sockets - Both force the dynamic human limb to fit into a static, rigid, and unforgiving bucket.

Socket-less Socket™

In 2014 Jay Martin, CP, FAAOP invented the Socket-less Socket™ technology. The Socket-less Socket™ challenged the industry’s conventional wisdom of how prosthetics can be fit. Through using a set of modular flexible plastic parts, it’s conformity and comfort proved to be far superior than rigid bucket sockets for many users.

In the continued evolution of comfort, Jay has once again re-imagined prosthetics from the ground up. “I set aside my entire career developments and started afresh from a blank canvas. I wanted to make a design that was not only more comfortable, but that resolved the underlying challenges with prior developments - to enable comfort to be truly accessible to all amputees.”

Jay’s latest socket design, the Slingshot Socket™, is his most comfortable socket yet. Using predominantly soft structural-fabrics, the SlingShot Socket™ fully conforms to the limb shape and provides unprecedented comfort.

Comfort is Now Accessible to All Amputees

It is core to our company DNA to not only have the most comfortable sockets that exist, but also to make that comfort reachable to amputees around the world who otherwise do not have access to prosthetics. In many parts of the developing world, there is a lack of trained practitioners and specialized equipment needed to fabricate and fit prosthetics, leaving over 30 million amputees without access to even antiquated hard sockets.

We’ve eliminated the need for time-consuming traditional fabrication methods and equipment, and created a socket simple enough for a layman to fit. This changes the paradigm for amputees around the world who otherwise do not have access to comfortable prosthetics.

Even in developed countries like the United States, many amputees do not have time and financial resources available for the costly multi-day fitting and fabrication processes required to make conventional prosthetics.

We believe comfort and a restored quality of life should be accessible to all amputees – regardless of socio-economic status or geographic location. Our uniquely simple-to-fit SlingShot Socket™ technology makes long-lasting comfort accessible to all amputees, and at a fraction of the cost of conventional rigid prosthetics.
